Hydraulic Analysis are thrilled to announce our achievement with DCWW in winning the Institute of Water’s ‘Clever Data’ Innovation Award – Welsh Area 2017/2018.

The Institute of Water Awards give a much needed spotlight for the many innovative individuals and companies within the water sector to demonstrate their excellence, and are just part of the commitment the Institute of Water is making to promote the right cultural environment and encourage pride in the sector.

The innovation is a proven concept of a combined product and service offering. Hydraulic Analysis undertake a one day asset health check on site and install a Pipeline Condition Monitor in the Pumping Station. HAL then measure, monitor and act on the PCM data over the coming years by alerting the client operations team to any deterioration or change in operating conditions, particularly low pressure alarms which indicate a possible burst.

A variety of stakeholders have benefited of this offering, such as:-

  • Environment – Active monitoring and rapid response to pollution incidents.
  • Public – Improved pollution reaction timing and effective pro-active measure to counter possible bursts.
  • DCWW – Improvement in operational performance, reduction in reactive measures.
  • National Resources Wales/ OFWAT – Assurance of long term measures in place to achieve industry and regional objectives.

This innovation is now installed across all four regional DCWW delivery areas and is at the full implementation stage. It is a unique collaboration between the DCWW Rising Main Team at Dinas, HAL, SmartHub and DCWW Operations. Hydraulic Analysis is a one stop shop; from carrying out a detailed asset health check on site, commissioning of the PCM, monitoring and acting on PCM data and alerting DCWW Operations to any deterioration or change in operating conditions, particularly low pressure alarms which indicate a possible burst.

By improving the health of rising mains and reducing bursts through proactive measures on site, such as air valve replacement, we have been able to identify and resolve operational issues which would have otherwise resulted in rising main bursts. Of the 2 sites where bursts have continued, we have been able to identify that these rising mains need part or fully replacing, supporting OpEx justification and long term improvement planning.
